Local Food Initiative

Delano is considered a "food desert" which is an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food. Since the closing of the family-owned Bayouth's grocery store and the Dillons at Douglas and Meridian residents of Delano have had to travel as much as 3 miles to get to the nearest grocery store.

Apart from efforts to bring a full-service grocery back to Delano we have tried several things to make fresh food more available. There have been food drives to benefit a local food pantry. We have a group working on Community Gardens to encourage people to grow at least some of their own food. We also have a group that is working on designing a new venue for a farmer's market. If you are interested in working on local food initiatives, please contact Kendice Talty.
