Welcome to Historic Delano

The Delano Plan

In 1999, Delano residents, business owners and clergy worked together to develop the Delano Neighborhood Revitalization Plan which lays out plans for future development in Delano.

Future residents or business owners should be aware of the Delano Neighborhood Design Guidelines which are contained in the Plan.

The Delano Neighborhood Revitalization Plan

There are a number of organizations working on different things in Delano.
In fact, it can get a little confusing. But rest assured, there is a Plan.

Here is a brief rundown of the different organizations and what they do in Delano:

The "Three-D" Affiliation
& the "Delano Plan"

The "Three-D" was the name given to an informal affiliation of the Delano Business, Clergy and Neighborhood Associations. When these groups were formed in the early 1990s, Delano was facing some serious issues: decaying infrastructure, declining incomes and property values and an aging population.

These organizations came together, with the help of the City of Wichita Planning Department to create the Delano Neighborhood Revitalization Plan. The "Delano Plan" is intended to encourage and guide future growth in Delano and was adopted into the City of Wichita's master plan in 2001.

Delano Community Development Corporation (CDC)

The Delano CDC has just been formed, but has been a part of the Delano Neighborhood Revitalization Plan since it's adoption in 2001. This non-profit corporation is intended to be an umbrella organization to coordinate the activities of the various other Delano groups with regards to the Delano Plan, as well as a way to bring in grant money for specific projects in the district.

The Delano CDC Steering Committee consists of representatives from the "Three-D", as well as Historic Delano, DelanoWichita.com, local residents, churches and other groups operating in Delano. The Chair of the Steering Committee is Karen Cravens, who may be reached at karen@delanowichita.com • 269-4263.

Delano Business Association

The Delano Business Association represents the businesses of Delano and is being re-established after a brief hiatus. They are currently working on Bylaws and looking for candidates for their first election of Officers. The Interim President of the Business Association is Jason Dilts, who may be reached at jasonaarondilts@gmail.com • 993-3555

Delano Clergy Association

The Delano Clergy Association is an organization representing the churches of Delano. The Clergy Association is very supportive of getting the Delano CDC formed. The Clergy Association President is David Shirer with West Side Baptist Church and his e-mail is davidschirer@juno.com.

Delano Neighborhood Association

The Delano Neighborhood Association represents the residents of Delano and is responsible for the annual Delano Clean-up and Delano Garage Sale. One of their main goals is increasing the quantity and quality of housing stock in Delano. President is Karen Cravens. (Yes, the same one) Once again, her e-mail is karen@delanowichita.com.

DelanoWichita.com

This web site is the place to go to get a pulse on the community. DelanoWichita.com is run by blogger extraordinaire Karen Cravens (Yeah, it's her again... she's an over-acheiver). Can you guess her e-mail address? The site is geared primarily towards locals and life in Delano, but has some content of interest to the business community, as well.

Historic Delano, Inc.

That's us! Well, you can find out all about us elsewhere on this site but basically, we organize events and work to promote Delano whenever we can. Nancy Lawrence at Central Plains Novelty runs things at Historic Delano, and can be reached at nancy@historicdelano.com.

Delano Community Garden

The Delano Community Garden was established behind Senior Services (200 S. Walnut) in 2007 by Susan Schocket with Infinite Growth Opportunities (IGO). IGO has started over a dozen Community Gardens in Wichita in the past few years.

Once Community Gardens are established they are managed by the gardeners themselves. In 2009 the Delano garden was increased to more than double it's original size, and a Salsa Garden and Herb Planters were added. For more information, e-mail garden@historicdelano.com.

Delano Community Farmers' Market

The effort to start a Delano Farmers' Market is a collaboration between several groups spearheaded by Historic Delano, IGO and the Neighborhood Association. Plans were started too late in 2009 for a market to come together. The Farmers' Market Committee is looking for vendors for a 2010 market. They may be reached by e-mailing market@historicdelano.com.
