Fifteen years ago if you mentioned Delano in a conversation, odds were that the other person would not know what (or where) you were talking about. Today, thanks primarily to the efforts of the Business, Clergy and Neighborhood Associations, almost everyone knows where Delano is - and many of them visit Delano regularly.
Delano has a very strong sense of community. There are a surprising number of churches and other community organizations working in the district. So many, in fact, that it can get confusing... but rest assured there is a plan. Check out The Delano Plan to learn more about these organizations and the plans for Delano's future.
There is plenty to interest the visitor to Delano. For history buffs, we have the Chisholm Trail marker, the Ben F. McLean Memorial Fountain and THE ACTUAL CHISHOLM TRAIL! For sightseers, Delano has old buildings with interesting architecture and the best views of the Keeper of the Plains, the Farm Credit Bank and Century II. Shopping enthusiasts will find dozens of unique specialty stores to explore. Find out more about Delano's attractions here.
For residents of Delano, the Neighborhood Association organizes an annual district-wide clean up as well as a Delano Garage Sale. There is always something to do with weekly and monthly events like the Thursday Night Pub Crawl or the Final Friday Art Crawl, as well as large annual events like the St. Patrick's Parade or the Ghost Stories of Historic Delano ghost tour.
There is a Community Garden for those who want to garden but don't have a place to put one. Gardeners may choose a plot, work it themselves and their only expense is for seeds (or starts) and a fee for water. A Farmer's Market is in the works, with a planned opening in June 2010.
Delano's online community is active as well, and steadily growing. Many of the businesses in our directory have links to their web sites. Several of them have Facebook or Twitter accounts. There are also a number of Blogs of interest to Delanophiles. Be sure to check out delanowichita.com with it's Blog Aggregator to keep up on the lastest buzz from the blogosphere.
